Ghana’s Black Queens will battle South Africa for the bronze medal at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Friday, July 25, 2025.
The third-place playoff is scheduled for 19:00 GMT at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca and follows both teams’ painful exits from the semi-finals earlier this week.
Ghana came agonisingly close to reaching the final, but were edged out 4-2 on penalties by host nation Morocco after a 1-1 draw at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday night.
The Queens, making their first semi-final appearance since 2016, went ahead in the first half through a composed finish from Stella Nyamekye. But Morocco hit back after the break with Sakina Ouazraoui’s equaliser, forcing extra time and eventually a shootout.
South Africa, the defending champions, also suffered late disappointment. Banyana Banyana conceded a first-half penalty converted by Rasheedat Ajibade after Bambanani Mbane was adjudged to have handled Folashade Ijamilusi’s strike.
Linda Motlhalo levelled from the spot in the second half, but Nigeria struck a dramatic stoppage-time winner to seal a 2-1 victory.
Both Ghana and South Africa are assured of $300,000 for reaching the last four. However, Friday’s showdown will determine who takes home the additional $50,000 awarded to the third-place finisher.
