Black Queens head coach hails team’s resilience after quarterfinal berth

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has praised his team’s determination and performance after Ghana secured a place in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Queens sealed qualification to the last eight with a commanding 4-1 victory over Tanzania on Monday, July 14, in their final Group C encounter.

Ghana bounced back from a shaky start to the tournament, which saw them lose 2-0 to defending champions South Africa and draw 1-1 with Mali.

The emphatic win against Tanzania ensured they finished second in the group and advanced to the knockout stage.

Speaking to CAF Media after the match, Björkegren expressed pride in his squad’s resilience and progress.

“Ghana missed the knockout stages the last time they played [in 2018 at home], and we have now made it past the group stages,” the Swedish trainer said.

“The result is very important to us. We shall take it all in now because the players deserve this. They showed that they can stay true to our style and win,” he added.

The Black Queens will now turn their attention to a quarterfinal clash against Algeria, scheduled for Saturday, July 19, at the Stade Municipal de Berkane. Kickoff is at 17:00 GMT.
