Black Queens get $2,000 each for WAFCON quarterfinal spot

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has awarded Ghana’s Black Queens a cash prize of $2,000 each for advancing to the quarter-finals of the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Black Queens endured a challenging start to their campaign, losing 2-0 to South Africa in their opening Group C fixture, before settling for a 1-1 draw with Mali.

However, they bounced back impressively in their final group match on Monday, securing a commanding 4-1 victory over Tanzania to finish second in the group with four points.

This marks the first time in nine years that Ghana’s senior women’s national team has progressed to the last eight of the competition.

In recognition of their efforts, the Sports Ministry presented the team with a financial reward to boost morale ahead of the next stage.

Ghana will now face Algeria in the quarter-finals on Saturday, August 19, at the Stade Municipal de Berkane. Kick-off is set for 16:00 GMT.
