Black Queens Forward Stella Nyamekye confident ahead of WAFCON bronze clash

Black Queens forward Stella Nyamekye has expressed confidence in the team’s readiness ahead of their third-place playoff clash with South Africa at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The bronze medal match is scheduled for Friday, July 25, at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, where Ghana will be hoping to finish the tournament on a positive note after narrowly missing out on the final.

The Queens were edged out by host nation Morocco in the semifinals, falling 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw stretched into extra time. South Africa, the defending champions, also stumbled in the last four, losing 2-1 to rivals Nigeria.

Speaking ahead of the highly anticipated rematch, Nyamekye emphasized the team’s mental preparedness and solid build-up to the fixture.

“We have prepared very well for this game,” she said. “Based on the training we’ve had, we are mentally prepared for this game.”

Friday’s encounter will mark the second time Ghana and South Africa face off in the tournament.

In their earlier group-stage meeting, Banyana Banyana claimed a 2-0 victory — a result the Black Queens will be determined to overturn as they chase a podium finish.
