Black Queens coach Kim Björkegren says he rejected multiple offers before taking Ghana job

Head coach of Ghana’s senior women’s national team, Kim Björkegren, has revealed that he turned down several coaching opportunities before agreeing to lead the Black Queens.

The Swedish tactician was appointed earlier this year to replace Nora Häuptle, whose contract with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) had expired.

Björkegren made an immediate impression by guiding the Black Queens to a third-place finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, he explained the motivation behind his decision to accept the Ghana job.

I turned down multiple offers to become the Black Queens’ coach, he said.

The plan is to have a long-term plan for this team, looking at the performance at the WAFCON, and I believe we will be successful in the future, he added.

The 42-year-old is now focused on leading the team through the next WAFCON qualifiers and securing a place at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
