Bibiani GoldStars’ debut campaign in the CAF Champions League came to a disappointing end after they were thrashed 5-0 by Algerian side JS Kabylie in the return leg in Tizi Ouzou on Sunday evening.
The Ghana Premier League champions had already suffered a 2-0 defeat in the first leg at the Accra Sports Stadium, and the latest result sealed a 7-0 aggregate exit in the preliminary round.
GoldStars endured a nightmare start when goalkeeper Emmanuel Kobi scored an own goal just seven minutes into the game.
Ryad Boudebouz doubled the hosts’ lead midway through the first half, before Mehdi Merghem struck after the break to put Kabylie firmly in control.
The Miners’ woes deepened in the 60th minute when defender Emmanuel Ankrah was sent off, reducing them to 10 men.
Kabylie took full advantage, with Lahlou Akhrib adding a fourth moments later, before Oualid Maliki wrapped up the emphatic victory in stoppage time.
JS Kabylie advance to the next round of the competition, while GoldStars must now regroup and focus on defending their domestic crown in the Ghana Premier League.
