The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Bekwai, Salifu Issaka Salia, has engaged traders on the need to adopt proper sanitation practices as part of a broader effort to improve hygiene in the municipality.
The engagement formed part of a clean-up exercise organized by the Bekwai Municipal Assembly to rid the town of filth and instill a culture of cleanliness among residents, particularly traders who operate daily within the central business district.
Speaking to Adom News after the exercise, Mr. Salia said the assembly has resolved to make the clean-up activity a monthly routine.
He urged traders to take the initiative seriously, stressing the importance of maintaining a clean environment, especially in markets and public trading areas.
He acknowledged that some traders claimed they had not received prior notice of the sanitation day, but assured that going forward, the assembly, led by himself, would intensify communication to ensure wider participation.
Some traders who participated in the exercise expressed concern over the conduct of their colleagues, especially those who operate at night.
They noted that most of the waste left behind in the markets is caused by these night traders, whose activities often go unchecked due to the late hours.
One frustrated trader suggested that individuals who profit from trading but leave waste behind should be held accountable and compelled to clean up after themselves.
The MCE reiterated the assembly’s commitment to supporting all efforts that promote a cleaner and healthier environment for the people of Bekwai.
