Be thankful for change after 2024 election — Catholic Bishop of Jasikan tells Ghanaians

-

The Catholic Bishop of the Jasikan Diocese in the Oti Region, Rev. Gabriel Ababio Mantey, has urged Ghanaians to be thankful for the changes that occurred during the December 7, 2024, general election.

He stated that since the beginning of this year, under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, there have been no reports of scandals or corruption, in stark contrast to the era of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Speaking at a gathering at Breweniase in the Nkwanta South, Bishop Mantey highlighted that within the first month of Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, the country was embroiled in the Movenpina scandal, which included the rapid endorsement of a loan document worth approximately Gh¢4 million within just four minutes.

He remarked that if Ghanaians were to enumerate the political scandals from the previous administration, the list would be extensive.

The Bishop congratulated President Mahama and his team for their current efforts, emphasizing that they will be recognized for their work.

Research indicates that corruption and scandals are on the rise across Africa, with Ghana losing about $15 billion annually to such issues.

He expressed concern that, due to these challenges, the country has had to rely on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a $3 billion bailout, which he deemed unacceptable.

Bishop Mantey affirmed that he, along with other clerics, will continue to hold governments accountable and criticize any actions that could undermine the country’s commitment to combating corruption.
