Bawumia slams tribal, religious propaganda in NPP primaries campaign

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has condemned what he describes as tribal and religious propaganda being deployed against him by fellow aspirants ahead of the party’s 2026 primaries.

Speaking to party supporters on Sunday, August 24, the former Vice President warned that such campaign tactics risk deepening divisions within the NPP while diverting attention from the real causes of the party’s 2024 electoral defeat.

“As we go into the primaries, I am very concerned that some of our presidential aspirants have embarked on religious and tribal bigotry against me,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“In their desperate attempt to win votes, they ignore the data on why we lost the 2024 election and instead mislead delegates with propaganda.”

He alleged that one aspirant had urged delegates not to back him simply because he is Mamprusi, claiming it would cost the party support in Kusasi strongholds.

“This is very unfortunate and demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the situation,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia’s remarks follow recent comments by Dr. Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi and fellow flagbearer contender, who argued that Bawumia’s candidacy in 2024 alienated some northern voters due to historic ethnic rivalries.

Mr Acheampong suggested that past NPP leaders such as John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo had fared better in the north because they were viewed as neutral figures in tribal politics.

Rejecting this analysis, Dr. Bawumia insisted that ethnic arguments are unfounded and only distract from the true lessons of the 2024 loss.

He urged aspirants to focus on evidence-based strategies and unity-building rather than divisive rhetoric.

“Our survival as a party depends on unity and truth, not on stoking fear and prejudice,” he stressed.

“If we allow such propaganda to dominate, it will weaken us in both the primaries and the general election.”
