Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has described President John Mahama’s recent acknowledgment of the economic toll of the Covid-19 pandemic as “by the grace of God.”
Speaking during his campaign tour of the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia said Mahama was aware of the pandemic’s impact during the 2024 campaign but chose not to admit it publicly.
“From 2022, when the pandemic’s effects hit, prices of goods went up. During the 2024 election, we explained that the high cost of living was largely due to Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war. But President Mahama and the NDC said we were lying,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
The pandemic’s impact was one of the most debated issues during the 2024 general election. At the time, the then-ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) maintained that Covid-19 disrupted global markets, reduced government revenues, and significantly contributed to the rising cost of living. The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by Mahama, strongly rejected this view, attributing Ghana’s economic challenges to poor governance and mismanagement.
However, during a side event at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Mahama conceded that the pandemic had indeed left a deep scar on Ghana’s economy, wiping out two decades of progress in poverty reduction within just two years.
Dr. Bawumia said the admission was long overdue.
“They claimed Covid-19 had no impact on the economy and blamed everything on mismanagement. Now, President Mahama has admitted in New York that Covid-19 really affected economies, including ours, and undermined years of poverty reduction efforts.
“The President knew the truth but didn’t say it during the campaign. By the grace of God, he has now said the truth, and by God’s grace, the truth will always prevail,” he added.
