Bawumia outlines welfare package for NPP members

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the welfare needs of party delegates and grassroots members if elected as flagbearer and, ultimately, President in the 2028 elections.

The former Vice President first made this pledge ahead of the 2023 NPP presidential primaries, emphasizing that the welfare policy would be fully operational regardless of whether the party is in government, and tailored to meet the specific needs of party members.

“An army marches on its stomach,” Dr. Bawumia noted, stressing that the party cannot hope to recapture power if it fails to meet the welfare needs of its grassroots and structures.

He cited research indicating that perceived neglect contributed to voter apathy in the 2024 elections and pledged to address this through a broad and sustainable welfare programme.

“We will roll out major, targeted welfare policies that directly address our members’ needs. I have ideas for a broad, effective, and sustainable welfare programme for the NPP, and it will be one of my major initiatives once you give me your mandate to lead this party,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia explained that one of the first steps would be establishing a Welfare Desk at every level of the party to collate data on members’ needs, ensuring equitable distribution of resources without bias. “No ‘adidigya’ or ‘menyaa hwee’. Resources will go directly to the grassroots to facilitate party work,” he added.

His message of building an inclusive and formidable party ahead of the NPP flagbearer contest on January 31 has gained significant traction.

On Wednesday, 15 of the 23 NPP MPs in the Eastern Region declared their support for his candidature, citing him as the most prepared and marketed candidate for the flagbearer role.
