Member of Parliament for Asante Mampong, Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, has said the decision by over 60 New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s anticipated 2028 presidential bid is based on his proven leadership qualities and potential to transform Ghana—not personal ties.
“Supporting a candidate has nothing to do with friendship or being a colleague; it’s about who has the Ghana factor,” the MP stated in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show.
His comments follow a closed-door meeting held on Thursday, June 19, 2025, between Dr. Bawumia and the group of NPP MPs who endorsed him.
The endorsement comes ahead of the party’s presidential primaries, scheduled for January 31, 2026.
Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong explained that the MPs were not coerced into backing Dr. Bawumia but made the decision freely based on conviction.
“At this point in our party’s journey, we believe Bawumia is the best candidate to lead the NPP and the best person to lead Ghana. He has the tools to rejuvenate the party and turn the fortunes of the country around,” he emphasized.
He added that each MP present at the meeting expressed strong belief in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and vision for the nation.
