Bawumia arranged sureties for Wontumi’s release – Hassan Tampuli

-

The Member of Parliament for Gushegu and Deputy Minister for Transport, Hassan Tampuli, has made claims that former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia arranged for the sureties that secured the release of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

He was speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, May 31.

“Let me put this on record that Dr Bawumia has arranged the sureties for the release of Chairman Wontumi. That has been done. His Excellency Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has made arrangements for the sureties,” he said.

The Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party(NPP) was arrested earlier this week by the Economic and Organised Crime Office(EOCO).

He was later granted bail of GH¢50 million with two sureties to be justified, a condition party members claim is excessive and politically motivated.

Following initial arrangements to see Chairman Wontumi on Friday, Dr. Bawumia despite being granted access with the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin said they couldn’t see him.

Chairman Wontumi was moved from the EOCO office to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters, as officials cited security concerns over the large crowd that had gathered, demanding his release.

Meanwhile, his lawyers have filed a motion at the Accra High Court seeking a review of his bail conditions, with the hearing set for June 2.
