The Upper East Regional Minister has assured that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will take place without disruption, despite ongoing security concerns in Bawku.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Akamugri said adequate security arrangements have been made to ensure the safety of both candidates and examination officials in the conflict-affected area.
“During a meeting with stakeholders, including GES officers, governing boards of the schools, and the traditional council, we agreed that some arrangements will be made for the WASSCE candidates to partake in the practicals, which start on 5th August,” he said.
“We will bring the students to write the exams and make further arrangements for the rest of the papers,” he added.
Mr. Akamugri also explained that the reopening of schools for first- and second-year students would depend on how the situation evolves in the coming days.
His comments follow government’s decision to evacuate students from Bawku, Nalerigu, and nearby areas due to heightened violence in the region.
A statement signed by Minister of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye, indicated that some students had been deliberately targeted, prompting urgent intervention to protect lives.
While Mr. Akamugri could not confirm the number of students to be evacuated, he said the operation would cover four schools within the Bawku Municipality.
