The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict in Bawku in the Upper East Region, calling for urgent action to restore peace, protect lives, and safeguard religious and community institutions.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 30, the Council condemned the violence, which it said has resulted in loss of lives, displacement of residents, and disruption of development efforts.
The CCG highlighted the negative impact on churches and mission facilities in the area, many of which provide essential spiritual and social services. According to the Council, several churches have suspended operations, while mission properties have been damaged.
“Bawku is home to numerous Christian congregations and mission facilities that have long contributed to peace-building and social development. Their protection is crucial for the well-being of the entire community,” the statement read.
The Council appealed to the leaders of both factions to prioritize peace and engage in sincere dialogue.
“We urgently call on the leaders of the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities to embrace dialogue and demonstrate leadership in ending the violence for the sake of their people and future generations.”
The Council also urged religious bodies, civil society organizations, opinion leaders, and youth groups to intensify mediation and reconciliation efforts, emphasizing the importance of grassroots engagement in rebuilding trust and fostering sustainable peace.
On security, the Council called on personnel deployed to Bawku to remain professional, neutral, and restrained in their conduct, cautioning against actions that could escalate tensions or undermine community trust.
“The primary duty of the security forces is to protect all citizens, especially the vulnerable and places of worship, without fear or favour,” it noted.
Reaffirming its commitment to peacebuilding, the CCG urged government to implement inclusive and lasting solutions to address the root causes of the conflict.
It also called on churches nationwide to pray for peace, healing, and reconciliation in Bawku and the entire Upper East Region.
“The instability in Bawku threatens not only lives but also social cohesion and national unity. Achieving lasting peace is a collective responsibility,” the Council warned.
