Barimah (Dr) Kwabena Awuah Parker, Chief of Akyem Sokode Dwaso in the Eastern Region, has spearheaded a community-driven campaign to promote responsible mining practices.
Barimah (Dr) Parker is rallying traditional authorities and miners around a shared goal: protect Ghana’s environment while sustaining livelihoods.
The initiative, led by Barimah Parker, himself actively engaged in mining and gold trading, comes amid growing concern over the damage caused to rivers and other water bodies through illegal and irresponsible mining.
The outreach workshops were held in Antobrakrom, Abom Mentukwa and Antoa Krom, all within the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region.

In total, 238 miners participated in the Ashanti Regional sessions.
He was joined by Nana Kofi Asamoah of Pakyi No. 2; Nana Okyere Darko Ampem, Chief of Antobrakrom; and Nana Oteng Mensah Ababio, Chief of Abom Mentukwa, underscoring the united front presented by traditional leadership.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the workshops, Barimah (Dr) Parker said insights gathered from the engagements would be channeled into supporting the operations of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).
He commended the government for steps taken toward establishing the GoldBod and personally pledged to contribute to its success.
“Our water bodies are our life,” he emphasized, noting that sustainable mining must be both an economic and environmental priority.
The engagement signals a growing role for traditional authorities in shaping responsible mining practices at the grassroots level, where the real battle for Ghana’s environmental future is being fought.
