Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has said he was in very good spirits throughout his detention, and thanked Ghanaians for their support after a court granted him bail.

Speaking to the media with his lawyer on Saturday, October 3, the MP said the people of Ghana had seen through what he called the NDC’s propaganda, and that the support he has received has been massive.

“And I’m extremely grateful to the people of Ghana who have seen through the propaganda of the NDC. The support they’ve given me is massive and I will assure them that I am indeed above board. No dirt can stick on me,” he said.

He said the case should not be fought through evidence released to the media, and challenged his accusers to come to court.

“Come to court and come and prove that whatever you are, alleging amounts to guilt on my part for which reason you think the court should convict me?”

He added that what was happening to him was a clear case of witch-hunting.

‘Justice has prevailed’

His lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, said the day’s outcome showed that the rule of law had won out.

“A liberty of a member of parliament and a lawyer of considerable standing has been secured as well so we are better off,” he said.

Atta Akyea said the defence was not afraid of the charges because the case was now in the right forum.

“We are not afraid of the charges as preferred against him. This is the farmal way. There’s a difference between your theory and the evidential support you need to give, which the judge would then depend on either to convict or acquit. So we are in the proper forum.”

He also challenged the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to prove its case in court.

“Whatever evidence they believe they have against a lawyer who’s worked for a client and raked in money, and the client has made a commercial decision to settle and there’s a shortfall on the account of the time value for money, I mean, they should come and prove it.”

“We are ready for the fight, and I’m glad that today justice has prevailed,” he added.

He pointed out that his client had walked into EOCO’s office of his own accord and then spent two nights in custody.

Baffour Awuah has pleaded not guilty to charges including conspiracy to commit a crime, dissipation of public funds and intentionally causing financial loss to the state. He has also denied a money laundering allegation relating to an alleged GH¢1 million transfer to the then Managing Director of SIC Life in 2024.

The two sureties for the GH¢10 million bail are the Member of Parliament for Bosome Freho and the Member of Parliament for Effia.
