Former Deputy Defence Minister, Major (Rtd.) Derrick Oduro, has ruled out mechanical failure as the cause of the military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two government ministers.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Maj. Oduro insisted the Ghana Air Force follows strict protocols, making technical failure unlikely.
“This can only be about bad weather and not a faulty helicopter. I’ve used that same aircraft several times without any issues. The military follows rigorous checklists before every flight. Accidents like this rarely happen,” he said.
He added that military aircraft are subject to thorough inspections and are operated by highly disciplined personnel, making such incidents uncommon.
His comments come in the wake of Wednesday’s fatal crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, which killed Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and other top officials.
Also deceased are Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC; and former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye.
The fallen military personnel include Squadron Leader Peter Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo.
Chief of Staff Julius Debrah described the incident as a national tragedy, with the President ordering all flags to fly at half-mast in honour of the victims.
