Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, has emerged the winner of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary for the Ayawaso East Constituency.

The primary, held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, was conducted to select the party’s candidate for the upcoming by-election.

Baba Jamal secured 431 votes, narrowly defeating Hajia Amina Adam, who received 399 votes.

Mohammed Ramne garnered 88 votes, Dr. Yakubu Azindow had 45 votes, and Mohammed Najib received 1 vote. These totals reflect the combined results from the two voting centers.

The tightly contested primary attracted significant public interest, particularly amid discussions around campaign conduct. During the exercise, Baba Jamal’s campaign reportedly distributed items, including 32-inch television sets and boiled eggs, to delegates—gestures he described as acts of goodwill, emphasizing that they were not intended to influence the outcome.

With this victory, Baba Jamal will now lead the NDC into the Ayawaso East by-election.

Prior to the vote, projections by Mussa Dankwah, Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, suggested that Baba Jamal’s support was unlikely to exceed 38%, based on recent polling data and voter trends in the constituency. Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament Mahama Naser Toure, had been projected to lead with approximately 54% support.

Mr. Dankwah noted that even under the most favourable conditions for Baba Jamal, the data indicated a significant gap between the two leading contenders, making a dramatic late swing in voter preference improbable.
