The candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Baba Jamal, has been declared the winner of the just-ended Ayawaso East by-election.

After what observers described as a low voter turnout, 16,928 out of an estimated 50,000 registered voters cast their ballots to elect a new Member of Parliament to serve the remainder of the late Nasser Toure Mahama’s term in the 9th Parliament of the Republic of Ghana.

At the close of polls on March 3, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged victorious, securing 10,884 votes to win the contest convincingly.

His closest challenger, Baba Ali Yusif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), polled 4,009 votes. Independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda garnered 1,885 votes, David Kanor, also an independent candidate, secured 104 votes, while Ibrahim Iddrisu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) obtained 43 votes.

Here are the full results:

  1. Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed (NDC) – 10,884
  2. Ibrahim Iddrisu (LPG) – 43
  3. Baba Ali Yusif (NPP) – 4,009
  4. Mohammed Umar Sanda (Independent) – 1,885
  5. David Kanor (Independent) – 104

The election was largely incident-free, a situation many attributed to the heavy police presence deployed across the constituency.

Leading figures from both major political parties monitored the exercise. From the NDC, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, former National Chairman; Linda Akweley Ocloo, Greater Accra Regional Minister; and Tanko Computer, Director of Elections, were present at various polling stations. On the NPP side, former Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, and former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson were also sighted at some centres.

With this victory, Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed is expected to be sworn in by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, at the next sitting of the House.
