The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, John Dumelo, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Nelson, a student journalist at the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), who lost his life while attempting to cross the N1 highway.
In a statement issued following the incident, the MP described the passing of the young journalist as “very unfortunate” and emphasised that student safety within the constituency remains his top priority.
“The safety of each student in Ayawaso West is my utmost priority. The passing away of Nelson, the student journalist who was trying to cross the N1, is very unfortunate,” the statement read.
Dumelo assured the GIJ community and the general public that immediate steps would be taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“As Member of Parliament, it is my duty to ensure that appropriate measures are taken immediately to avoid similar situations,” he added.
He also extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the entire GIJ community, affirming his solidarity during this difficult time.
“My sincere condolences to the family and also to the entire GIJ community. I am with you,” the MP said.
Nelson’s death has reignited public concerns over pedestrian safety along the N1 highway, particularly near tertiary institutions, prompting renewed calls for footbridges, traffic lights, and other safety interventions to protect students and commuters.
