The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ayawaso North, Haruna Mohammed Awal, has urged parents and guardians to refrain from involving children in child labour and instead prioritize their education and well-being.
He made the call during a public sensitization campaign organized by the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the Municipal Education Directorate.
The campaign aimed to raise awareness about the dangers and consequences of child labour and brought together various stakeholders from across the municipality.
“Children deserve to grow in safe environments where their rights are respected. We must say no to child labour and yes to education. That is the only way we can secure their future,” Mohammed Awal said in an interview with Adom News.
He emphasized the urgent need to protect children from exploitative labour practices that hinder their development and rob them of opportunities for a better future.
Adding her voice to the campaign, Rosemond Aboagyewaa Opoku, the Assembly’s Senior Social Development Officer, called for a national scale-up of public education on child labour.
“Ending child labour requires consistent advocacy and stronger national campaigns. Public education must be intensified to address the root causes and protect our children,” she said.
Opoku also called for stricter enforcement of existing laws and appropriate penalties for individuals who engage children in labour instead of allowing them to enjoy their right to education and a safe childhood.
The campaign is part of the Assembly’s broader efforts to promote child welfare and safeguard the rights of children within the municipality.
