Haruna Mohammed, Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has claimed that senior officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are unhappy following Baba Jamal’s victory in the Ayawaso East parliamentary primaries held on Saturday, February 7.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Probe, Mr. Mohammed linked the alleged displeasure within the NDC to the President’s decision to recall Baba Jamal from his post as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, over claims of vote-buying.
According to him, the presidency, the leadership of the NDC and the parliamentary majority were dissatisfied with Baba Jamal’s victory, prompting his recall from the diplomatic position.
He further alleged that the discontent is rooted in Baba Jamal’s perceived alignment with the NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia.
“It is a clear chance to tell the people of Ghana that the presidency was not happy that Asiedu Nketia’s person had won the election. And all the machinery is against Baba Jamal; they don’t just like the man, they hate him, including the majority caucus in Parliament. I don’t know what he has done for him to be hated so much within the circle of the NDC,” he claimed.
Baba Jamal’s victory in the primary clears the way for him to contest the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election scheduled for March 3.
The closely fought primary attracted significant public attention, amid reports of alleged inducement and vote-buying involving some of the aspirants.
