Autodata partners with Interpol to raise awareness on stolen vehicles in Ghana

The President of Autodata Ghana, William Boadi, together with some executive members of the Chamber, has paid a courtesy call on the Head of Interpol at the Ghana Police Headquarters.

The meeting sought to strengthen collaboration between the two institutions to raise public awareness about stolen vehicles in Ghana and the need for proper verification before purchase.

Contributing to the discussions, the Executive Secretary of Autodata Ghana, George Dumenu, referenced the 2023 Stakeholders’ Engagement, where the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), in partnership with American and Canadian security agencies, carried out several operations across local garages.

These operations led to the arrest of both vehicle dealers and owners after intelligence revealed that some cars were stolen abroad.

“Two years later, some celebrities in Ghana and certain influential people in society had their vehicles arrested. In some instances, the owners were extradited, and in all these operations, there is only one answer that comes from both the dealership and the consuming public—that they were not aware that those vehicles in question were stolen ones. That is a perplexing situation, and it is certain that the syndicate behind this disgraceful act and perpetuating the menace are operating a complex system,” Mr. Dumenu said.

He further raised concern over who could be the next unsuspecting victim of the criminal network.

“The disturbing question now is, who is next? Is it a pastor, a lawyer or judge, a ministry or department, a minister of state, or the president? Indeed, those operations are creating a dent in the image of Ghana,” he cautioned.

Mr. Dumenu emphasised that a careful review of the situation points to the urgent need for practical measures and heightened awareness. He commended Interpol for its willingness to support vehicle verification efforts.

“It is heartwarming to note that Interpol has promised that its doors are open to the public for verification of vehicle documents before purchase to avoid unnecessary litigation and embarrassment. This is a step in the right direction, and the Chamber of Autodata Ghana is ready to create the right platform to stem the menace,” he said.
