President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Dwumfour, has condemned the latest attack on JoyNews journalist Carlos Calony at a demolition site along the Spintex Road in Accra, describing the increasing assaults on media practitioners as alarming and unacceptable.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen following the incident on Wednesday, July 30, Mr. Dwumfour stressed that the safety of journalists in Ghana is under serious threat, warning that the trend is undermining confidence in the country’s democracy.
“There is much to be done than just issuing statements. Over time, we have condemned the attacks and impunity against journalists—the people who promote our democracy. Yet, our security has been weakened,” he lamented.
According to him, the Association has already recorded 12 attacks on journalists since the beginning of 2025, a figure that equals the annual average from previous years, despite the year being only seven months old.
“Averagely, we record 12 attacks on journalists annually. But we are just seven months into the year, and we have already recorded 12. It means something is not right,” Mr. Dwumfour stressed.
He also criticised the involvement of state security officers in some of these attacks, stating that personnel funded by taxpayers are now turning their authority against the very citizens they are meant to protect—including journalists.
“The security personnel we pay with taxpayers’ money, whose uniforms we sew for them to protect us, are the ones attacking us now. Who is going to protect us?” he questioned.
Mr. Dwumfour announced that the GJA will address the media and the public on Thursday, July 31, to officially state its position on what he described as the rising and disturbing trend of attacks on journalists.
“Our eyes are still open. We will make our position clear, and we don’t care who is involved. It is becoming one too many,” he said firmly.
He further called on the National Security Coordinator to rein in officers accused of misconduct, expressing confidence that the Coordinator himself does not condone such behaviour.
“I know the National Security Coordinator does not support these things because he is a brother and friend, so I expect him to call his people to order,” Mr. Dwumfour stated.
He reaffirmed the Association’s resolve to protect press freedom in Ghana, adding, “We will not be intimidated. We remain resolute in discharging our duties.”
