Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has described the late President Professor John Evans Atta Mills as the best leader Ghana has produced under the Fourth Republic, citing his integrity and unwavering stance against corruption.
Speaking on JoyPrime on January 6, Mr Kpebu said he would, without hesitation, vote for Atta Mills when asked to name the best president of the Fourth Republic, despite the former president’s relatively short time in office.
He noted that the brevity of Atta Mills’ tenure often leads people to say good things do not last, but stressed that the quality of leadership displayed during that period far outweighed its length.
“Atta Mills never took our pesewa,” Mr Kpebu said, highlighting the late president’s personal honesty. He added that when a leader lives an upright life, it strengthens the fight against corruption and propels national development. “When the life of the leader itself speaks volumes, it helps to drive the nation.”
He recalled an incident at the Tema Port where customs officers allegedly fled upon seeing Atta Mills, only for the president to tell them, “Look, don’t run away; I am human.” Mr Kpebu described the episode as a clear reflection of the fear and respect inspired by his integrity.
“There are numerous examples that underscore Atta Mills’ character and leadership style,” he said, reinforcing his view that the late president set the highest standard in the fight against corruption.
He further noted that former US President Barack Obama’s visit to Ghana was influenced by the kind of honest leadership Atta Mills represented. “Any day, I would vote for Atta Mills,” Mr Kpebu concluded, stressing that the former president “stands tall among them.”
