A silent protest is underway at AT Ghana’s headquarters, formerly AirtelTigo, in Accra, with staff dressed in black and red attire and wearing armbands to express concern over potential job losses amid the planned merger with Telecel.

Employees have voiced fears that the consolidation could affect more than 10,000 jobs nationwide.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam George, confirmed that the two telecom operators would be merged to form “a stronger and more sustainable national telecom operator.”

During a staff meeting, the minister reassured employees that none of AT Ghana’s 300 permanent staff would lose their jobs under the proposed merger. He explained that the decision to merge was driven by AT Ghana’s worsening financial position, reporting losses exceeding $10 million in the first eight months of 2025, and that continued government support through public funds was no longer sustainable.

Despite these assurances, employees remain concerned. Reports that multiple investors are interested in acquiring and restructuring the company have fueled fears that thousands of livelihoods could still be at risk.

Monday’s demonstration was intended as a symbolic warning, highlighting staff unease over the uncertain future of the company.
