The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asutifi South in the Ahafo Region, Benjamin Assabil Donkor, has raised alarm over the critical shortage of blood at the Saint Elizabeth Hospital blood bank in Hwidiem and is appealing to residents to donate blood to help save lives.
Speaking to Adom News during a blood donation exercise organised by GOIL Ghana Oil Company in collaboration with the hospital at Kwaku Nyumah and Seinchem, Mr. Donkor noted that patients in urgent need of blood often struggle due to the inadequate supply.
He revealed that on several occasions, relatives of patients have approached him for financial assistance to purchase blood, only to discover that none was available.
“This initiative by GOIL and the hospital is commendable and much needed in our district,” he stated.
Felix Gadzato, a Laboratory Scientist at Saint Elizabeth Hospital, confirmed the persistent shortage, describing it as one of the hospital’s biggest challenges. He explained that as a referral facility, the demand for blood remains high, making regular donations essential.
He encouraged residents to participate in the ongoing effort, stressing that their support could make a significant difference in saving lives.
