Asutifi South Assembly, chiefs destroy criminal hideout in Hwidiem

The Asutifi South District Assembly, in collaboration with traditional authorities, has cleared a plantain farm in Hwidiem that had reportedly become a hideout for criminals terrorizing residents and travellers.

According to the District Chief Executive (DCE), Benjamin Assabil Donkor, the decision followed intelligence that the farm and its adjoining footpath had become a hotspot for criminal activities.

Speaking to Adom News, Mr. Donkor explained that unsuspecting pedestrians using the route were often attacked by armed men who seized their mobile phones, wallets, money, and other valuables — sometimes threatening to kill victims who resisted.

“We received several reports that criminals had turned that area into their base, attacking people both day and night. We decided to act quickly with the chiefs to destroy the hideout and restore safety,” he said.

The DCE added that the Assembly plans to install streetlights along the stretch to enhance visibility and improve security for commuters.

“We’ll provide proper lighting in the area to ensure residents and road users can move freely and safely, especially at night,” he assured.

The operation, jointly executed by the Assembly and community leaders, has been widely commended by residents, who say the move will help reduce robberies and boost confidence in local security measures.
