Asutifi North stakeholders roll out measures to sustain WASH programme

-

Stakeholders in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region have outlined new strategies aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programme in the area.

Speaking to Adom News during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Kenyasi, Water Expert for IRC Ghana, Jeremiah Atengdem, highlighted the notable progress made since the introduction of the WASH programme in 2018. He said access to clean water and improved hygiene in the district has significantly increased.

However, Mr. Atengdem cautioned that without effective planning, the progress achieved could be reversed once supporting partners exit.

“Some communities, as well as educational and health institutions benefiting from the programme, are not managing their water and sanitation facilities properly,” he observed.

He emphasized the need for joint stakeholder action to formulate and implement practical strategies that will ensure the ongoing maintenance and responsible use of water and sanitation facilities.

The Asutifi North District Coordinating Director, Samuel Badu Baiden, also acknowledged the progress made, particularly in increasing water coverage from 40% to 90%. Despite this success, he noted that sanitation challenges remain due to the district’s growing population.

He described the stakeholder meeting as a vital platform for identifying and adopting practical interventions that will help sustain the WASH initiative for future generations.
