Assembly members in the Asunafo North Municipality of the Ahafo Region have raised serious concerns about the growing trend of open firearms possession, especially among the youth.
Speaking to Adom News after the municipality’s first general assembly meeting in Goaso, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Joseph Akparibo described the situation, largely involving unlicensed weapons, as a source of fear and panic.
“We are seeing more young people openly carrying firearms, and it is creating unrest in the community,” he said. “If no radical action is taken, nobody can predict what will happen next.”
He added that municipal authorities are collaborating with the police and planning unannounced operations to apprehend offenders and confiscate illegal firearms.
Kasapin Assembly Member Razak Ahmed also criticised the Ghana Police Service for not doing enough to improve security. “Five people have been killed in our municipality since last year, and there have been no arrests. More police officers need to be deployed to protect residents and restore public confidence,” he urged.
