Assemblies to receive GH₵25m each this year – Mahama

-

President John Mahama has announced that every Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assembly (MMDA) will receive a minimum of ₵25 million this year.

He made this known at an orientation and training programme held in Accra on Wednesday, June 18, stating that the move aligns with the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) 2024 manifesto, which prioritises local governance.

“This year, every assembly—from the largest to the smallest—will receive not less than GH₵25 million.

“The NDC manifesto outlines a bold and people-centred agenda that puts local government at the heart of national development. You are the first line of the economy,” he stated.

The President explained that the allocation is to ensure local governments are adequately resourced to meet the development needs of their respective communities.

He reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to decentralised development, highlighting the crucial role of local authorities in national progress.

He further emphasised that the 2025 budget reflects this commitment, with 80 percent of the District Assemblies Common Fund allocated directly to MMDAs.

He cited key government initiatives—including the Clean Up Ghana campaign, Adumawura, the National Apprenticeship Programme, Mahama Cares, and Feed Ghana—not as abstract policies but as practical programmes that require strong coordination and effective leadership at the district level for successful implementation.

He urged district leaders to align the use of these resources with local priorities and their medium-term development plans.

“These funds must reflect the needs of your people and be used to deliver real development outcomes,” he added.
