Assafuah questions Mahama’s donation to Black Queens

Ranking Member of Parliament’s Sports Committee, Ekow Vincent Assafuah, has cast doubt on the amount former President John Mahama donated to the Black Queens after their impressive performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Black Queens secured a bronze medal in Morocco — their best finish since 2016. On their return, the Minority in Parliament presented the team with GHC100,000. Former President Mahama and Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang later hosted the team and made an undisclosed donation.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Sports Nite, Assafuah challenged the transparency surrounding the donation, claiming it was significantly less than assumed.

“I challenge President Mahama that the money he gave to the Black Queens is less than 40,000 dollars,” he alleged.

Despite missing out on the championship, the team has been widely praised by the Ghana Football Association, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and Parliament, with calls for increased support for women’s football.
