The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has urged party members and the public to remain patient amid concerns over the limited number of recruits being taken into Ghana’s security services.

According to him, the government is prioritising efforts to stabilise and strengthen the economy as part of broader plans to create more employment opportunities for Ghanaian youth.

His remarks follow revelations by the Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, that more than 105,000 applicants progressed to the medical stage of the recruitment process, even though only 5,000 positions are available for final enlistment. He also disclosed that nearly 500,000 people applied for the exercise.

Speaking to party supporters in Dodowa in the Greater Accra Region, Mr Asiedu Nketia cautioned against rushing to address the situation, noting that sustainable solutions take time.

“The anger will not solve the problem. Without sufficient funds, how can we employ more than necessary? Fixing issues takes time. The first priority is to strengthen the economy, and President Mahama is working diligently on this. We are already beginning to see the benefits. We must exercise a little more patience to allow these efforts to create opportunities for everyone,” he said.

He added, “Rising impatience will not help. Let us learn to be patient. Things will improve, and this government is committed to opening up opportunities for all.”

Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has called on the Ministry of the Interior to refund about GH¢113 million collected from applicants who were unsuccessful in the recruitment process.
