Asare, Simpson, Opoku join Black Stars camp ahead of Unity Cup in London

-

Ghana Premier League trio Benjamin Asare, Razak Simpson, and Kwame Opoku have been called up to the Black Stars camp for the upcoming Unity Cup scheduled to take place in London later this month.

The players departed Ghana on Friday night, heading to the UK for the maiden edition of the friendly tournament.

Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, who made his senior debut during Ghana’s double win in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March, has cemented his place in the national setup. He travelled soon after helping his club secure a 3-1 victory.

Nations FC defender Razak Simpson, a pivotal figure in his side’s push at the top of the Premier League table, will miss their crucial encounter against Samartex due to his international duties.

Asante Kotoko forward Kwame Opoku, currently in fine form for the Porcupine Warriors, will also be unavailable for their game against Bibiani GoldStars.

Meanwhile, Belgian-based midfielders Lawrence Agyekum and Abu Francis are expected to join the camp on Saturday.

Ghana will open their Unity Cup campaign with a blockbuster match against Nigeria on May 28 at the Gtech Community Stadium, home of English Premier League side Brentford. The losing side will play in the third-place playoff, while the winner proceeds to the final on May 31.

The Black Stars are scheduled to officially open camp on Sunday, May 25. The Unity Cup forms part of their preparations for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mali and Chad in September.
