Asante Akyem North MCE nominee confirmed amidst NDC’s boycott

-

National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives in the Asante Akyem North constituency in the Ashanti Region on Monday boycotted the confirmation of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) nominee, Sarah Amoakowaa.

Some NDC assembly members also joined the boycott, leaving only members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to approve her.

Speaking to Adom News, the NDC members accused Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, of manipulating the confirmation process.

They claimed that following their boycott, Dr. Amoakohene brought in a new group of government appointees to ensure the process continued.

The Youth Organiser, Willington Dawuda Kwame, therefore declared that they cannot work with Madam Amoakowaa, describing her confirmation as illegal.

The constituency First Vice Chairman, Collins Afira, also expressed disappointment in Dr. Amoakohene and the national executives of the NDC.

On May 16, 2025, Madam Amoakowaa failed to secure her confirmation after falling short of the required two-thirds majority.

Out of the 31 assembly members who voted, Amoakowaa secured only 17 votes.

Tensions flared even before the final tally was announced, with reports of heated exchanges among the assembly members.

The situation escalated, resulting in some damages, prompting state security officials to intervene and restore calm.
