Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has tipped the Black Stars to be the surprise package at this summer’s 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana, making its fifth World Cup appearance, will face Panama, England, and Croatia in Group L. Their standout campaign remains 2010 in South Africa, where the team reached the quarterfinals for the first time.

Speaking to One Football, Africa’s all-time leading World Cup scorer expressed confidence in Ghana’s potential while also predicting Kylian Mbappé as the tournament’s top scorer.

“Ghana will be the dark horse of the tournament, and Kylian Mbappé will be the top scorer,” Gyan, who played at the 2006, 2010, and 2014 World Cups, said.

He also forecast a blockbuster final between Argentina and Germany, backing the Europeans to lift the trophy.

“Argentina and Germany are my picks for the World Cup final, and Germany to win,” he added.

After group-stage exits in both 2014 and 2022, the Black Stars are determined to improve their record. They open their campaign against Panama on June 17, followed by England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

As part of their preparations, Ghana face Austria at Vienna’s Ernst-Happel-Stadion on March 27, and Germany in Stuttgart on March 30.
