Former National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Women’s Organizer, Anita Desoso, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, describing her as the driving force behind her political journey and a true trailblazer for Ghanaian women.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Madam Desoso said she was deeply shocked upon hearing the news of Mrs. Rawlings’ passing, extending her condolences to the bereaved family, especially her children.
“I was shocked when I heard about her sudden death. I will extend condolences to my siblings, her children. May God rest her soul,” she said.
Madam Desoso praised Nana Konadu for transforming the role of women in Ghana’s political and social space, saying that before her influence, “women were nothing in society.”
According to her, the late former First Lady’s work through the 31st December Women’s Movement paved the way for women to rise in leadership, contributing to milestones such as Ghana’s first female Vice President.
“But for Nana Konadu, women were nothing in society. Now we have a first female Vice President because of the role she played and her impact. Now women are making strides and making a name,” she noted.
While acknowledging that the late First Lady, like every human being, may have had her flaws, she urged Ghanaians to focus on her achievements and honour her lasting legacy.
“She is human and may have offended people; she is not without blemish. But she did a lot of good, so we should focus on that and honour her legacy,” she added.
Reflecting on her personal relationship with the late former First Lady, Madam Desoso revealed that Nana Konadu was the one who introduced her to politics.
“She is the one who brought me into politics, and but for her, I wouldn’t have come this far or become who I am today,” she said.
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement and wife of former President Jerry John Rawlings, passed away on Thursday, October 23, 2025, after a brief illness.
