The Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has expressed support for a potential return of Andre Ayew to Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the veteran forward still has a role to play if he remains fit.

Ayew, 36, has not featured for the Black Stars since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, but recent developments at club level have reignited calls for his inclusion. The former West Ham United and Swansea City attacker joined Dutch side NAC Breda in January.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Ankrah emphasised Ayew’s wealth of experience as a key asset.

“If Andre Dede Ayew is fit, he should be included in the Black Stars squad for the World Cup because he is Ghana’s most experienced player,” he said.

Ayew has scored once in 12 appearances since his move to Breda but remains Ghana’s most capped player, with a career spanning multiple FIFA World Cups and AFCON tournaments.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L for the 2026 tournament, where they will face England, Croatia, and Panama, opening their campaign on June 17 in Toronto.

The final 26-man squad is expected to be announced on June 1, while the Ghana Football Association prepares to appoint a new head coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo.
