Residents of Amantena in the Asante Akyem North Municipality of the Ashanti Region have staged a massive demonstration to oppose any form of mining in their community.
Dressed in red and holding placards, the protesters warned that they will fiercely resist attempts to introduce mining activities, which they say could destroy their lands, pollute water bodies, and threaten their livelihoods.
Mining has long been a concern in the area, with locals citing environmental degradation and health risks experienced by neighbouring communities affected by similar operations.
The demonstrators called on the Municipal Chief Executive and the Member of Parliament to act swiftly to protect the community from what they described as impending environmental harm.
Youth leader Emmanuel Agyekum, who spoke to the media, said the people of Amantena remain united and resolute in their demand for a mining-free community.
