Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, Alhassan Tampuli, has stressed that the Ghana Police Service must demonstrate full control over the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, August 30, Mr. Tampuli emphasized the importance of visible and effective policing to maintain public confidence in the electoral process.

He referred to assurances by the Inspector General of Police that security for the by-election would be entirely under the command of the police. While commending the commitment, he insisted it must be translated into actions that voters and the wider public can clearly observe.

“The Inspector General of the Ghana Police Service has stated that the police will be fully in charge of this by-election, and they must be seen to be in charge,” he said.

The Deputy Ranking Member further highlighted that transparency in security arrangements is critical, especially in a politically sensitive contest. He cautioned that any deviation from the police’s declared responsibility must be communicated openly.

“In case they change their mind and decide that they need any assistance from the military, then they must inform the good people of Ghana and Akwatia so the voters are aware,” Mr. Tampuli emphasised.

His remarks come amid heightened national attention on the Akwatia by-election, which is expected to be fiercely contested. Stakeholders—including political parties, civil society organisations, and election observers—have all stressed the need for peace and credibility.

Mr. Tampuli’s call adds to growing voices urging security agencies to ensure a transparent and professional approach in safeguarding the poll.
