The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Akyem Oda Constituency has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government of promoting illegal mining activities in the area.
In a statement signed by the Communications Director, Naphtali Kofi Duodu, on October 7, 2025, the NPP said that during the party’s eight years in power, no mining activity occurred in Akyem Oda, citing their commitment to environmental protection and public health.
However, the group alleged that since the NDC assumed office, the Minerals Commission has granted licenses to two mining companies to operate in the constituency, leading to a surge in illegal mining activities in areas such as Asomdwe, Sakumonu, the Odasco stretch near the ARDA water project, and the Zongo community close to the Birim River.
They warned that the illegal operations are threatening the Birim River, making it increasingly difficult for the Ghana Water Company to treat water for residents.
“The health of our constituents is deteriorating, and our water bodies are being destroyed. The people of Akyem Oda deserve better,” the statement read.
The NPP is calling for urgent government intervention to halt the illegal mining activities and restore the environment.

STATEMENT BY THE LEADERSHIP OF THE NEW PATRIOTIC PARTY IN THE AKYEM ODA CONSTITUENCY ON RECENT DEVELOPMENTS OF ILLEGAL MINING.
7-10-2025
The leadership of the New Patriotic Party in the Akyem Oda constituency wishes to set the record straight regarding mining activities within our constituency. During the eight years of NPP governance, there was not a single instance of mining operations, whether legal or illegal, within Akyem Oda. Our leadership remained committed to protecting the environment, safeguarding public health, and preserving the livelihoods of our people.
Recent developments under the current administration have raised serious concerns, as reports from the minerals commission indicate that two mining companies have been given a license to mine in Akyem Oda just after the NDC was sworn into government. The emergence of mining activities in Akyem Oda is a clear indication that the NDC government is encouraging miners to operate vigorously in areas that were previously untouched.
This shift is deeply troubling, especially as it contradicts the President’s own promise to end illegal mining, but in our constituency, several areas have been encroached with illegal mining activities going on in some areas, like the Asomdwe area, the Sakumonu area, the Odasco stretch close to the ARDA water project and the Zongo community near the Birim River.
There is an urgent threat as the Ghana Water Company faces increasing difficulty in treating the Birim River for consumption by constituents. The health of our constituents is deteriorating, and our water bodies are being destroyed. The people of Akyem Oda deserve better. Therefore, we demand swift and decisive action to restore the integrity of our environment.
