Residents and peasant farmers in Akyem Anyinasin, a farming community in the Eastern Region, have strongly opposed alleged plans by some individuals to undertake illegal mining in the area.
The community fears that such activities would devastate their farmlands and pollute vital water bodies, threatening both livelihoods and the environment.
The farmers told Adom News they have been reliably informed of attempts to mine on their lands, sparking widespread anxiety.
Leaders of the residents’ protest, including Kwadwo Atta Appiah-Korang, President of Save the Nation for Future Group, and William Boakye, Convener for Akyem Ayinasin Farmers, warned that galamsey would strip families of their farmland, contaminate drinking water, and deepen poverty.
The residents have called on President John Mahama and the Inspector General of Police, Tetteh Yohuno, to urgently intervene and stop the plans before they escalate into conflict.
