Akwatia defeat: NPP will bounce back in 2028 – Kennedy Nyarko Osei

Kennedy Osei Nyarko , MP for Akim Swedru Constituency

New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Akim Swedru, Kennedy Nyarko Osei, has expressed confidence that the party will bounce back to reclaim the Akwatia seat despite its loss in the September 2 by-election.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Osei praised the party’s executives and campaign team for their efforts, even though the outcome favoured the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“The final certified results by the EC has confirmed the NDC candidate as the winner of the by-election. We must learn to be patient at all times to allow the Election Commission to do their work rather than always rushing to go ahead of them which has the potential to heighten tensions.

Congratulations to the entire team that were deployed by the party in Akwatia. You guys did an impressive job. Better luck next time.

And to the NDC and the MP-elect, I say ayekoo for fighting hard to win the seat. We are going back to the drawing board to do our homework and come back stronger in 2028. GOD BLESS OUR HOMELAND GHANA AND MAKE IT GREAT AND STRONG,” he stated.

The by-election saw NDC candidate Bernard Bediako Baidoo declared MP-elect after securing 18,199 votes, defeating the NPP’s Solomon Asumadu, who polled 15,235.

In total, 33,518 valid votes were cast across 119 polling stations. Declaring the results, Returning Officer Eric Gyamfi said: “By the power vested in me, I hereby declare Bernard Bediako Baidoo as MP-elect.”

The outcome brings the composition of the 9th Parliament to:

  • NDC: 184 seats

  • NPP: 87 seats

  • Independent: 4 seats

The by-election followed the death of the sitting MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, who passed away after a short illness. Voting was generally peaceful, though minor disturbances were reported at some polling stations.
