The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will today, August 4, 2025, hold its parliamentary primaries in the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region to elect a candidate for the upcoming by-election.

The Electoral Commission has scheduled the by-election for September 2, following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, on July 7 after a short illness.

Three aspirants are contesting the NDC slot: 2024 parliamentary candidate and former MP, Henry Boakye Yiadom; Erasmus Koney Ali, popularly known as Asanka, who currently serves as an assembly member and presiding member; and lawyer Bernard Bediako Baidoo.

The winner of today’s internal election will battle the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) acclaimed candidate, Solomon Asumadu, in what is expected to be a fiercely contested race.
