Former Akwatia legislator, Baba Jamal, has argued that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) should have stuck with its 2024 parliamentary candidate, Henry Boakye Yiadom, for the September 2 by-election rather than reopening nominations.
In an interview with Accra-based Citi News, he said keeping Mr. Yiadom, popularly known as Okoyo, would have provided continuity and avoided the internal divisions that often come with primaries.
“I was not in favour of any primaries. I believed we should have maintained the previous candidate and moved forward with him. But others felt differently, and in a democratic setup, the majority’s will prevails,” Baba Jamal noted.
He stressed, however, that the focus must now shift to fostering unity ahead of the by-election.
“As a party, we must consolidate our ranks. I don’t think we are doing badly. Both Asanka and Okoyo have been on platforms with our new candidate, which shows we are moving together.”
The NDC primary in Akwatia featured three contenders, including Mr. Yiadom, constituency secretary Bernard Bediako Baidoo, and Erasmus Koney Ali, widely called Asanka Poyooyo.
At the end of the contest, Mr. Baidoo emerged the winner and will lead the NDC against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Solomon Asumadu, who was acclaimed by majority support.
