Akwatia by-election comes off today

The much-anticipated Akwatia by-election comes off today, September 2, 2025.

The election follows the passing of the late NPP MP, Ernest Kumi, on July 7, which created a parliamentary vacancy.

Akwatia, historically a swing constituency, is regarded as a key battleground and a crucial test for both major parties ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The contest is between the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Solomon Asumadu and the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Bernard Baidoo Bediako.

While both candidates remain confident of victory, a survey by Global InfoAnalytics has projected Mr. Bediako as the likely winner.

The poll, conducted between August 27 and 28 with a sample of 2,050 voters, showed Bediako leading with 53% support, compared to Asumadu’s 47%.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) has assured of a smooth and transparent process, as the Ghana Police Service deploys 5,500 personnel to maintain law and order.
