Tensions flared on Tuesday morning in the Akwatia constituency during the ongoing by-election.
Adom FM/TV’s Chief Jerry Forson reported that disturbances broke out after a group believed to be New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters stormed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) office and pulled down posters of the party’s candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo.
Eyewitnesses claimed the men acted in a coordinated manner and alleged they were members of a security detail linked to the convoy of Effutu MP and Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
Despite heavy police deployment, security personnel struggled to immediately contain the situation. Mr. Afenyo-Markin is yet to officially comment on the incident.
The by-election was necessitated by the death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, on July 7, 2025. Voters are choosing between the NPP’s Solomon Asumadu and the NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo in what has become a keenly contested two-horse race.
Police have since stepped up visibility across the constituency, mounting checkpoints at strategic locations to prevent further escalation.
