Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has strongly criticized Chief Sofo Azorka, National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), over his conduct during the recent Akwatia by-election.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, when Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin made an unannounced visit to the NDC party office in Akwatia.
The move sparked heated exchanges between NDC members and Afenyo-Markin’s team, with Chief Azorka describing the visit as “highly disrespectful” and “provocative,” accusing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of attempting to intimidate NDC supporters.
Reacting to the development on Wednesday, September 3, Mr. Aboagye condemned the violence and held the NDC leadership accountable.
“People seem to think that our police are only there to separate people during fights, and so they have lost their fear of them. I witnessed someone throwing a punch over the head of a policeman to hit another individual. That person should have been taken away immediately to send a message that such behavior won’t be tolerated,” he said on Channel One TV.
He stressed that violence has no place in Ghana’s democracy and urged political leaders to set the right example.
“However, the greatest shame from yesterday falls on Sofo Azorka. Wherever he is this morning, he should feel embarrassed. He should reflect on his actions and the reputation he has created for himself, recognizing that this is 2025. Violence cannot be part of our democracy or our elections. Without Azorka’s involvement, I believe we wouldn’t have seen such complaints at all,” Mr. Aboagye stated.
