Akwatia by-election: Asumadu congratulates Bernard Baidoo; sends important message

New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate Solomon Asumadu has conceded defeat in the recently concluded Akwatia by-election.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Wednesday, Asumadu revealed that he had called his main contender and MP-elect, Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to congratulate him earlier in the day.

“We are all one people, and an election is about a win or a loss. Once the election is over, we must come together and work towards the good of the constituency,” he said.

Asumadu urged the MP-elect to prioritise education and ensure the fulfilment of campaign promises, including the construction of inner-town roads.

He also expressed gratitude to the NPP for giving him the opportunity to represent the party in the Akwatia constituency.

“The party in Akwatia remains united. Even today, the election committee will be dissolved, but the party will definitely bounce back. We want to position Akwatia to honour the memory of Ernest Kumi so that his efforts were not in vain,” he added.

According to the Electoral Commission’s certified results, Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the NDC won the by-election with 18,199 votes. Solomon Asumadu of the NPP secured 15,235 votes, while Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) trailed with 82 votes. Out of 34,122 ballots cast, 33,819 were valid, and 303 were rejected.
